Japanese Calligraphy in NYC

I took Shodo lessons in Japanese calligraphy at Kampo Cultural Center on Bond Street, Downtown New York, over the course of a year.

I used to take Shodo lessons as a child, just as any other child in Japan. Shodo teaches children not only the art of calligraphy, but also focus and patience. These weekly evening classes at Kampo Cultural Center were almost like a form of meditation to me, after a busy day of work. Unfortunately the school closed its door since then and is no longer there.

Here’s me writing the character ‘wind.’
